Acolytes

Serving at the altar and assisting the clergy in worship.

Acolytes are specially appointed by the Church to assist the deacon and minister to the priest. An acolyte's duty is to attend to the altar's service and assist as needed in the celebration of the Mass.

Acolytes can assist in worship by carrying a processional cross, lighting candles, holding the Gospel book, holding candles or torches, assisting a deacon or priest with setup and cleanup at the altar, swinging a censer or carrying the incense boat, handing the offering plates to ushers, and many other duties as determined by the Rector.
